Choosing an Installer

To obtain a grant you must employ a certified BERR (Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, formerly the DTI) installer, or one that is registered with the Low Carbon Buildings programme. Details of how to find a local installer can be found through www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk.

Trade bodies such as the Solar Trade Association are also worth consulting as they ensure members work to strict guidelines and ethical practices.

Ask them installer to give you:

  • A feasibility study so that you know what you can generate and the potential savings you can make
  • A site survey looking at things like roof strength and compatibility of existing water heating systems with a solar version
  • A written explanation of building regulations and your legal obligations
  • A written quote
  • Help with grant applications
  • Date for installation and an estimate of the time it will take
  • A written invoice, and
  • A warranty.
